Artist, Goals & Patterns in Art & Life

THE ARTIST

THE ART OF ART

To fully appreciate the art we need to appreciate the artist.  In order to do that we need to understand the artist’s life, the adversities and triumphs they have experienced for us to truly understand and appreciate what the artist chooses to put on the paper or canvas, or create in three dimensional form.

As an artist, who am I? I grew up on a farm in southern Idaho. My Mother introduced me to the great artists by ordering black and white reproductions of artists and musicians from the Perry Picture Company.  I put them in scrap books along with the black and white or sepia toned reproductions of their art work.   As a young girl I began to read what I could about the life of the artists and eventually read the life of DaVinci and Michelangelo as well as Rodan, Van Gogh and others.  I became aware of the diverse types of artists, the uniqueness of each personality and the many styles of painting, sculpture and creating.

When I was about seven years of age my Mother and Father bought me ‘real’ watercolors, and a ‘real’ sable brush, and I was soon taking Art lessons from a woman in our small farming community who we discovered was an artist.  Now I was having the opportunity to follow in their ‘brushstrokes’!  Later when we moved I was able to take art lessons  at the home of a professor at the University.

To know me as an artist you need to understand I married and became the mother of three sons and four daughters.  I experienced many joys mixed with many adversities, trials and disappointments.  I put aside the painting when I began having my children, except for summers when we would turn the living room into an art class for all the children to have experiences learning to use pastels, charcoal, watercolors, acrylics, oil and even with clay.  There were big spaces in between my painting times but a resurgence came in 1981 until 1985.  In 1989, after 35 years of marriage my husband departed from this earth.  Painting and writing then had a resurgence in my life.  I am a realist in style, wanting to record as it is.  "Preserving the past and the present"  I am an earthly recorder, looking forward to being a celestial artisan someday!

THE ARTIST

IN THE ART OF LIVING

"There is only one adventure which is more satisfying and thrilling than the attempt to discover the will of the living God, and that is the supreme experience of honestly trying to do that divine will.  And remember that the will of God can be done in any earthly occupation.  All things are sacred in the lives of those who are spirit led...subordinated to truth, ennobled by love, dominated by mercy, and restrained by fairness and justice."  THE URANTIA BOOK page 1732

The first step in the journey to the art of living is to know who you are.  Be open to realizing your authentic self.  Be willing to move from unreality to reality.  As you realize who you are, you can then know Spirits plan for you.  It will come.  You will know what you are to do in this life.  Then you will know what your style is.  You will know what kind of a ARTIST you are to be!

"BE PATIENT AND OF GOOD CHEER." "LET YOUR SUPREME

DELIGHT BE IN THE CHARACTER OF GOD, AND HE SHALL GIVE YOU THE SINCERE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART."  "COMMIT YOUR WAY TO THE LORD; TRUST IN HIM, AND HE WILL ACT."

Proverbs 3:5

“It is only the inner life that is truly creative...The inner and the outer worlds have a different set of values...Only in the higher levels of the superconscious mind as it impinges upon the spirit realm of human experience can you find those higher concepts in association with effective master patterns which will contribute to the building of a better and more enduring civilization.  Personality is inherently creative, but it thus functions only in the inner life of the individual.  “Since this inner life of man is truly creative, there rests upon each person the responsibility of choosing as to whether this creativity shall be spontaneous and wholly haphazard or controlled, directed, and constructive.  How can a creative imagination produce worthy children when the stage whereon it functions is already preoccupied by prejudice, hate, fears, resentments, revenge, and bigotries?...Ideas may take origin in the stimuli of the outer world, but ideals are born only in the creative realms of the inner world.”  THE URANTIA BOOK page 1220

The two greatest adventures in life is to discover God’s will and then to do it!  Know who you are!  The Spirit of truth (Spirit of Christ) will bear witness that you are a Child of God.

First we are entitled to regard ourselves as a child of God because we are faith sons of God- we are sons and daughters of spiritual promise.  Second, a Creator Son of God became one of us, and in spirit we are truly related brothers of Christ and in spirit we too are sons of God.  Third, Christ’s spirit has been given to all mankind and this spirit gift ever draws us toward the divine Son and towards the Paradise Father, who is the source of that divine Son.  Fourth, The Universal Father has given us our personalities and a measure of divine freewill action.  Fifth, There dwells with us a fragment of the Universal Father, and we are thus directly related to the divine Father of all the Sons of God.

(Paraphrased from THE URANTIA BOOK 448:9)

God loves every individual. - We are all children in God’s Universe family.  Our Universe Father has an ideal plan for each of our lives.  That is what is referred to as Father’s will for you.  Spirit brings a predetermined plan, a model career, the ideal life for us.  It is up to us to receive the endowment.

Several years ago as I would hear the words, "The Father’s Will", something began to form in my mind about the word "WILL".  I didn’t know much about legal Will’s, but I began to see that there was an ‘overlay’ of the Father’s Will to a legal will that a Father on earth may leave for his children when he dies.  Then as I prepared a legal Will prior to leaving on a trip to the ‘Mainland’, the comparison came in focus and when I returned I prepared a document of ‘The Father’s Will’.  I hope you will enjoy my creative idea and it will make you smile as you think of the personal will of your Father in Heaven for yourself.  I sat at my computer I began to write what I thought my Father in Heaven would say in his will to me!  It was a beautiful document that I treasure.  You can always tell when something comes from Spirit for it is above that which we are able to do.

GOALS & THE OLD MASTERS

THE ART OF ART

What are some of my goals as I paint?

To do my very best

To create something that is beautiful

To create a likeness of the person I am painting

To convey a feeling of their personality and soul

To record a special place on this planet earth

To record history

To create a masterpiece!

Presumptuous?  Yes, but having been inspired by the masters there is always their pattern that serves as an underlay.  Portraits of my daughters were directly inspired by the ‘Masters’; Whistler’s Symphony in White was my inspiration for  Symphony in Life.  John Singer Sargent's Lady Agnew was the inspiration for my J Lei in Lady Agnew’s chair.  Another master, Renoir, was the inspiration for my painting of Hiwa by the piano.  Another painting of my daughter and I together was inspired by Elizabeth Vige'e Le Brun’s portrait of she and her daughter.  Bourguereau’s Girl and the Cherries was the inspiration for my pastel of the youngest daughter.

ONE STEP AT A TIME TO THE GOAL LINE

A LITTLE EVERY DAY

WILL ACCOMPLISH THE GOAL

The last few days the title of this paper has been running through my mind.  Two days ago I talked to one daughter, about it and then today talked to another daughter.  She said she had been experiencing this truth in her life experience.  I have had years of experience with this principle and I know that it works.  I really think it is the gradual plan of perfection that our Father in Heaven has for us mortals.  From the time we are toddlers we take one step at a time until we are able to climb the mountains that we choose in our lives.

I told my daughters how I wanted to get my degree and how it took me ten years to accomplish it one class a semester!  There was one semester when I attempted 18 credits, but  most of the times it was one or two classes each semester.  Finally in 1981 I graduated from the University of Hawaii with a degree in World Religion.

Painting is another example of doing a little each day.  In July of 1994 I received a commission to paint a copy of Harry Anderson's "Christ in Gethsemane" for one of the Church offices in Honolulu.  I started planning and got my materials and painted a little each day.  My painting was finished - one brushstroke at a time.  When I finished I called the ‘brother’ who had commissioned me and he was very pleased with it.  He had it framed so beautifully and has it hanging on a wooden paneled wall in his office.  It is placed behind where he sits, so that as he interviews people they are seeing our Savior in those final moments in Gethsemane.  Jesus was demonstrating to each of us that in those moments in our lives we can turn to God the Father in prayer and it may not change the outcome of what will happen, but we will be strengthened to get through it.

I can see that Jesus showed us the “at one ment” truth!  He showed us how to become ONE with our Spirits.  How to dedicate and consecrate our will to doing our Father in Heaven’s will.  He showed us how to forgive our enemies and pray for those that curse us.  He showed us how love is the most powerful energy in the Universe.  For he said to love others as he has loved us.

Everything we do is just one step at a time, one day at a time, one decision at a time. With God’s help we can do all that God wants us to do and be during our short life.

Those are the really OLD masters of the Art of Living!

"BE YE PERFECT"  That too seems presumptuous!  But we are assured that we can win the race for perfection.

"There is in the mind of god a plan which embraces every creature of all his vast domains, and this plan is an eternal purpose of boundless opportunity, unlimited progress, and endless life.  And the infinite treasures of such a matchless career are yours for the striving!”

“The goal of eternity is ahead!  The adventure of divinity attainment lies before you!  The race for perfection is on!  whosoever will may enter, and certain victory will crown the efforts of every human being who will run the race of faith and trust, depending every step of the way on the leading of the indwelling Spirit and on the guidance of that good spirit of the Universe Son-Jesus Christ, which so freely has been poured out upon all flesh."

REMEMBRANCE SUPPERS

FOR JESUS

The art of table setting and meal presentation

Since 1991 it has been a custom for me to prepare a Remembrance Supper for Jesus three times a year.  In April I prepare my version of a Passover meal, in mid August I prepare a meal and invite the sons and daughters and grandchildren to bring a gift for Jesus and share it with everyone.  The Sunday before Christmas we have a meal to remember all the gifts Jesus has given us.

APRIL 15, 2001 SUNDAY

REMEMBERING OUR MASTER AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST

THE OVERLAY OF EXPERIENCE

As I have studied the scriptures and read of the experiences of those men and woman who had the privilege to be recorded, I have often realized that I have had experiences that were similar to their experience!  In graphic arts the artist often works with several transparent overlays in order to get the various colors needed in the final printing.  Each is keyed carefully so that each overlay will fit perfectly over each other.

I began to see that my experiences were very similar to the "classical" experiences I would read about in the Bible, or Book of Mormon, and even some other people's experiences I would hear about.  I have concluded that as we grow spiritually on this earth, that there will be many basic overlays because the stages of growth are the same now as in the past.  The setting is different, but the experiences are similar.

In the 1970's while taking an Old Testament Class at the University of Hawaii the Instructor was talking about the "Constitutive experience" of the Exodus from Egypt for the Jews.  Just as the Constitution is the basis for our Nation's laws, the word means the "Primary" experience of a  person or group.  Our instructor said that in our lives we may also have a Constitutive experience which is the primary or foundation experience of our lives.  As a result of those words in class I went home and wrote what I called MY TESTAMENT, which was patterned after the first books of the Bible, and told my own bondage, exodus, burning bush experience, receiving God's instructions, wandering in the wilderness and finally getting to the promised land!  That was the first time for me to SEE the OVERLAY of the classical experiences.  Since then I have periodically recorded my list of experiences that are "LIKE UNTO THEM".  Following is my list of experiences and how I see them as an overlay for the experiences recorded in the various scriptures.  Recorded July 1992

LIKE UNTO THEM

ADAM AND EVE'S EXPERIENCE

Co-mingling good and evil

During my young adult years there was efforts to co-mingle good and evil, but how grateful I am for repentance and again grateful that I do not have to record those experiences.

ABRAHAM'S COVENANT WITH THE LORD

Be my teacher and I'll be the student

I very literally experienced this when after Laulani was not expected to live, I sincerely pleaded with the Lord to "Be my teacher", and immediately upon saying it realizing that I needed to learn to "listen" - to be a good student!

ABRAHAM'S EXPERIENCE WITH ISAAC

Assuming he was to take Isaac to sacrifice him, he proceeded up the mountain, but the sacrifice was not required and he was stopped from doing what he thought was the right thing.  God intervened.

In 1983, during a war scare with Russia, I had an experience where I thought God wanted me to move for the safety of my family.  With all sincerity I proceeded forth to do what I thought was required, and had to be rescued and “brought down the mountain” and home!  This experience is recorded in a private journal.

THE JOURNEY OF RUTH AND NAOMI

Ruth, a Moabite girl married an Israelite who was killed.  With her loving Mother-in law, Naomi, they had the courage to leave Moab and journey back to Israel.  Ruth found herself in a new homeland,  struggling to survive and finally married a good man.  Her Grandson become King of Israel and one of her adopted descendants was Jesus Christ.

I was named after Ruth, so the Book of Ruth has always been dear to me.  I began to see that my marriage and coming to Hawaii took courage during the 1950's, and I was saying to him, "Your people will be my people, Your land my land, Where you will be buried, I will be buried.  Fortunately "His God" and "My God" were one and the same.  Even though I didn't meet my Mother in law I learned to love and respect her as many told me what a magnificent woman she was.  When she was the President of the Women’s Relief Society in Hawaii, they say she pleaded with the sisters, "Don't grieve the Holy Ghost".

THE EXODUS AND THE PROMISED LAND - MOSES

The exodus, burning bush -I AM- Receiving the commandments, Wondering in the Wilderness, arriving in the Promised land.

My Constitutive Experience - My Testament.

There were basic experiences - chaos, emptiness, receiving the gift, class instructions, knowing and receiving, the promised endowment, working and enduring.  My Testament is recorded in a personal Book of Life.  It was written originally on a long scroll and rolled up and wrapped in a velvet cloth. (See below)

KING JOSIAH

While conducting temple repairs there was the discovery of the manuscript in the Temple.  Josiah reforms Judah's religion.

When I read about the manuscript discovered in the Temple I recorded My Testament on  the early computer paper that was continuous so it could be rolled up like a scroll.

My library discovery of the Revelation also reminds me of this Temple find - Certainly my maps of reality and my truth was enlarged as a result.  This discovery is recorded in a book titled Priceless Discovery and Fulfillment,  as well as in my personal Book of LIfe.

JOB

Job's trials, adversity, tribulation and triumph

I can relate to the experiences of Job.  After my daughter’s breakdown in 1989 I saw the overlay of Job’s experience with mine so much that I wrote a story called Le’Job which is found in my Book of Life.

MARY AND ELIZABETH'S CONFIRMATION OF EXPERIENCES

Elizabeth confirmed Mary's experience

Confirmation from another added power to a dream I had in 1983 which I mistakenly took to be prophetic.  That experience is recorded in a separate personal journal.

JESUS' FIRST VISIT TO THE TEMPLE - AGE 12

Going to his first Passover in Jerusalem

I grew up on a farm in Southern Idaho and three times a year we would drive in our early model car to Salt Lake City for General Conference. When I read of Jesus’ trips to Jerusalem, walking with his parents and later with his brothers, I recalled the similar pilgrimages with my family.

ON THE WAY TO ROME - GANID AND HIS TUTOR

His Tutor and Interpreter of Life

This story is found only in the Urantia Book, but I relate to it and love the story knowing that on my journey of life that I can have the same Tutor and Interpreter of Life because Jesus has given each of us a duplicate of HIS SPIRIT to be with us- We call it the Spirit of Christ or Spirit of Truth.

LUCIFER'S ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS

Lucifer's efforts to destroy the Plan Jesus had determined.

I shudder when I look back and realize I too have had encounters with Satan who wanted to destroy me.  Some of those experiences have been recorded in my book of life.

THE ORDINATION CEREMONY

Jesus and the Apostles - the setting apart

Being set apart for callings in the Church.  It is a choice experience to be called and set apart for service.  I am grateful I have had those experiences.  I served as a Stake Missionary in Los Angeles before I was married, then have served as a teacher in various auxiliaries and on the Stake Board of the Primary organization.  In all of these callings I have been seated in the Bishop or Stake President’ office and the Bishop or Stake President has put his hands on my head and called me to fulfill that calling with the help of the Spirit.

JESUS AND THE APOSTLES

Experiencing Community as a group

After reading M. Scott Peck’s book, “The Different Drum”, I went to a workshop to build Community.  Although it was a temporary experience with Community, it showed how it is possible for a group to go from Chaos to Community.

After my husband’s death I begged the mortuary to let me have some time alone with him.   As I sat by his body and talked to him I had a spiritual experience  of community with him.  I have recorded this in my book of Life.

This experience also relates to another experience follow.

AN UN-NAMED WOMAN ANOINTS JESUS' FEET

Her sins, and her gratitude for forgiveness

This experience was the first thing I read when I opened the Urantia Book to read it on May 4th, 1967.  Reading that experience touched my heart and I knew what I was reading was truly what happened.

I can also relate to this experience because my sins were forgiven and I too feel gratitude.

MARY OF MAGDALENE

Hearing the Good News, blossoming and growing,

Her calling, service and dedication

Her story is so inspiring and I relate to it because I also blossomed and grew when I began to have a realization of the Good News.  I too went through a transformation and experienced Church callings, service and was dedicated.

THE WOMEN'S EVANGELISTIC CORPS

Jesus called 12 women to teach and to minister among the women.  This record is found in the Urantia Book.

This recording of how Jesus organized the Women’s Corps is an inspiring part of the Life and Teachings of Jesus.  In mind I have organized A.R.T.S. T.W.O., an Association Reaching Teaching Sisters- it is a Truth Wisdom Odyssey.  When I have  the opportunity I share with the women I am guided to meet.

For a few years a group of women friends organized the Hawaii Women's Corps and had study meetings to help us be better wives, mothers and teachers.  When members moved we were unable to continue.

I hope that this website will bring woman together to learn and grow spiritually.

NICODEMUS AND ALMA - THE BIRTH OF THE SPIRIT

And Jesus said to him, “You must be born again”

My own birth of the spirit experience happened in 1964.  I have recorded some of the experience titled, “The Hawaiian Experience” on this website and in a private book titled Significant Stories.   A full recording is found in my private book titled, SIGNIFICANT STORIES.  I have also recorded the experience in my book,

PRICELESS DISCOVERY AND FULFILLMENT.

MARY AND MARTHA

Devotion, testimony, and occasional mixed priorities

I was taught that it was alright to “leave the dishes in the sink” and work on creative projects, or on genealogy or history or church assignments. But occasional I’ve mixed my priorities and been like Martha in the recording, just worried about the work that needed to be done.

Most of the time I have been eager to sit at HIS feet, and I ask him to  "walk where I walk today".  I want to hear his words, and thrill to hear the audio of HIS life and teachings..

MARY AND THE WOMEN WANTING TO PREPARE JESUS' BODY

They took the spices and myrrh and went to prepare the Master’s body properly

As I have stated previously, I took my supplies and prepared my husband’s body for burial.  I rubbed him with lotion, combed his hair, trimmed his finger nails and toe nails and basically groomed him.  I put shaving lotion on him and then talked to him for some time. I had two hours with my sweetheart.  I truly felt the true meaning of community with him--with his SPIRIT.

WALKING WITH JESUS ON THE ROAD TO EMMAUS

The Brothers walked and talked with the Master not realizing who he was until they invited him to eat with them.  They suddenly realized who he was.  Later they said, “Didn't our heart burn within us”?  “It is Jesus!  We have seen him!”  The brothers experience always reminds me of the following:

My walk with "I AM"  I have recorded this experience in a paper titled, “The Master’s Program”, which is so sacred to me that it is only included in my personal book, SIGNIFICANT STORIES

GETHSEMANE

The pain of leaving such immature disciples.

The ministering of Angels and the strength to continue.

I feel I had my Gethsemane when I was told my baby would probably not survive.  I went in my room with a broken heart and a contrite spirit and felt the ministering of Angels soon after my prayer.  Since then, when adversities come I pray and then receive the  strength to continue.  I have felt the ministering of Angels after my husband died and welcomed their companionship.

THE PSALMS OF WORSHIP

Beautiful prayers of worship and gratitude

I have had the experience of recording my own personal Psalms and have recorded many of my prayers in my personal journals and writings.

LEHI'S DREAM

Lehi's dream as recorded in the Book of Mormon.  Lehi and his family were leaving Jerusalem to come to a promised land.

They were early travelers on the “Road Less Traveled”.

Lehi's dream of the Tree of Life as found in the Book of Mormon.

I relate in the following ways:

My dream - I thought I should leave Oahu for family safety.

I have already stated that I was wrong in my interpretation.

My dream of the Tree of Life- This is recorded in a dream book.

Scott Peck's Road Less Traveled was a book that helped me to learn to solve problems and to look forward to traveling the “Road Less Traveled”.

ALMA CHAPTER 38

The advise of Alma to his son Shiblon.

I say unto you, my son, that I have had great joy in thee already...

My Chapter 38 to Laulani.  “I say unto you, my daughter, that I have had great joy in thee already”.  I wrote it Feb. 3, 1983.  I have included this, “Chapter 38”,  in the section of “LIKE UNTO THEM” only in my personal book of THE ART OF ART AND THE ART OF LIFE.

ALMA'S PRAYERS FOR HIS SON ALMA

His prayers were finally answered when Alma was born of the spirit

My prayers for my sons and daughters and grandchildren.

JOSEPH SMITH'S PRAYER IN THE GROVE

“Ask and He upbraideth not and it shall be given” Book of Mormon.

Asking, Receiving --insight into my name and mission in life

Receiving the Father’s will.  This Will is shared in a brief way in the section on Preparation.

It is given in entirety on two pages of this website.

PARLEY P. PRATT

The Joy of reading The Book of Mormon.  In studying the history of the church I came upon this wonderful quote of Parley P. Pratt, who was an apostle in the days when Joseph Smith organized the Church in 1830.  He wrote this about this discovery and reading of THE BOOK OF MORMON.  It fits perfectly how I felt when I read THE URANTIA BOOK!

I think it must be a reaction to reading eagerly sought after TRUTH.

"I opened it with eagerness, and read its title page.  I then read the testimony of several witnesses in relation to the manner of its being found and translated. (found in the Forward) After this I commenced its contents by course.  I read all day; eating was a burden, I had no desire for food; sleep was a burden when the night came, for I preferred reading to sleep.  As I read, the spirit of the Lord was upon me, and I knew and comprehended that the book was true, as plainly and manifestly as a man comprehends and knows that he exists.  My joy was now full, as it were, and I rejoiced sufficiently to more than pay me for all the sorrows, sacrifices and toils of my life..."

I felt the same joy when reading The Urantia Book  -

The Fifth Epochal Revelation to Urantia.
